Medical Students Gain Hands-on Patient Care Experience

6/19/2023

Congratulations to our fourth-year medical students from Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine on completing their clinical rotations with us! Micaela Bush, Karla Geisse, Lauren Harmon, Rachel Hicks, Amrita Hundal and John Rushemeza are now headed to their respective residencies.

Millie Schultz, MD, HRH Director of Medical Education, congratulated the students and thanked the HRH staff members who assisted in their achievement of this significant milestone. “It’s so important for medical students to gain meaningful experience to prepare them for Intern Year,” she said. “I appreciate the time my colleagues dedicated to providing these students with invaluable experiences and opportunities that helped the students develop the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed.”

Since 2015, HRH has provided students with opportunities to enrich their education through direct patient care. Each student performs month-long rotations across different areas of our system. They follow patients throughout their entire hospital stay, develop plans of care and triage pages and calls. An important feature of our program is their exposure to various departments of the hospital that are not part of the standard medical school curriculum. These rotations include Pharmacy, Respiratory Therapy, Laboratory, Wound Care, Emergency Medical Services and many more. The goal is to illustrate the processes and resources used to complete orders and to give insight into the patient experience. The students said the excursions allowed them to see the full cycle of medicine, and how important each team member’s role is in providing patients with the highest level of care. Another important feature of the program is the excellent Didactics sessions provided by our faculty. Without exception, each lecture had very positive feedback from students.

At an end-of-the-year luncheon, students presented an award for Preceptor of the Year to Lirim Krveshi, DO, Hendricks Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine. The group said this decision was unanimous. The students appreciated Dr. Krveshi’s approach to treating them like team members and involving them in patients’ care. In turn, Dr. Krveshi complimented the students’ decisions to rotate at HRH. “It’s hard to find this level of training as a fourth-year medical student,” he said. “Their procedure skills will be much more advanced than their peers, thanks to the opportunities they were given at HRH.”

Amanda Wright, DO, Marian Medical School Dean, thanked the HRH staff. “You went beyond teaching them aspects of medicine and showed them an additional layer of emotional support as a mentor,” she said. “Relationships matter. The HRH medical staff provides an excellent balance of training and mentorship guidance.”
