All of us enjoy looking forward to those fun social events including reunions, picnics, pitch-ins and holiday or birthday parties. But sometimes, it can feel a bit overwhelming when you’re trying to make healthy food choice at these events. The good news is there are many things you can do to eat healthy and still have a great time. Here are a few tips to get you started:
- If you’re comfortable with the people hosting the party, call ahead to find out what they’re serving. If the food is going to be high in fat, try to choose lower fat choices throughout the rest of that day. But keep in mind you don’t want to skip meals before you go, because this can cause you to overeat.
- Look at all the choices before filling your plate — then make a plan. If you know what food is at the end of the line, you may want to pass something at the beginning to allow for that item.
- Try to choose more fruits, vegetables and whole grain foods when they’re available.
- Drink water or sugar-free drinks. Sodas, punch, fruit drinks and alcoholic beverages can add lots of calories.
- If there are several desserts, choose one. A small sample of all of them can make those calories add up quick.
- Take a healthy food choice as a gift. Bringing a vegetable or fruit tray is a nice gesture, and you’re assured you’ll have at least one healthy choice.
- If you eat more than usual, talk your family and friends into going for a walk after you eat. This isn’t just a good time to bond — it’s also a good time to burn some calories.
When you go to your next gathering with a plan and make health-conscious choices, you can feel good about what you’re eating. Just always keep in mind that it’s important to relax and enjoy yourself! Looking for more healthy eating tips? Be sure to check out our blog for regularly updated content.
