Movies play a big role in Andrew Pyle’s life. They are one of his family’s favorite activities. So, who would Hendricks Regional Health’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO) want to represent him in a movie about his life? “I’d say Steve Carrell,” he said. “We don’t look alike but he’s funny. He could add some humor.” Carrell’s serious side would come in handy when portraying the seemingly inconsequential moments that led to major turning points in Andrew’s life.
At left: Chief Financial Officer Andrew Pyle’s favorite holiday is Halloween. As you can see from his family’s Halloween 2024 costumes, the rest of his family may share his feeling. “We enjoy dressing up, whether it be formal or fun,” he said.
Andrew always found numbers easy to understand. As a business administration and marketing double major at Indiana State University, he really enjoyed his accounting professors and started to envision accounting as a potential career. An astute observation helped clear up that vision. “Our associate dean in the College of Business told me, ‘I think you’re an accountant,'” said Andrew. “I held him in very high regard, so hearing him say that solidified the idea for me.”
Following college, Andrew thought public accounting was going to be his life and joined PricewaterhouseCoopers as a Certified Public Accountant and financial statement auditor. “Then life caught up with me!” he laughs. After he and his wife, Chelsea, welcomed their son, Preston (born at Hendricks!), Andrew found his work schedule incompatible with the type of father and husband he wanted to be. He left the firm to run the accounting department at Calumet Specialty Products.
He didn’t think of working in healthcare until January 2018. While hanging out with his neighbors, Andrew got to talking to his neighbor’s mother, Yvonne Culpepper (former interim Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Nursing Officer). She encouraged him to apply for Controller at Hendricks. “I told her I don’t know anything about hospitals or healthcare,” he said. “She asked me ‘How hard can it be?’”
Yvonne was convincing. Andrew joined Hendricks in April of 2018. Over two years, he played an instrumental role in many milestones like implementing Epic, opening a new hospital and responding to the pandemic.
Andrew says Trent Chastain, Revenue Cycle Director, was integral to his early days. “Trent really helped me learn healthcare finance and how accounting and finance work with the revenue cycle,” he said. “I’ve learned so much from so many people over the years and am so grateful for the time they gave me.”
Hendricks President & CEO Dr. Michelle Fenoughty named Andrew CFO in August 2024. “Andrew’s expertise in healthcare finance and his understanding of the unique needs and challenges of a health system our size make him exceptionally suited for this role,” she said.
Now with 6 years of experience in healthcare under his belt, Andrew says he’s not done learning. “The willingness to mentor others and share knowledge is one of the things that makes our culture so unique,” he said. “It’s one of the reasons why I enjoy working at Hendricks.”
